For this creative assignment, our Photo Media instructor directed us to take our viewer somewhere they usually don’t go.
I checked out an older USM 100mm EF mount Macro Lens from the equipment cage on campus and brought it home. I found working with this lens to very challenging. The autofocus is clunky and indecisive so I found myself using manual focus more than not. Also with the longer focal length, getting into a stable position was difficult.
I just went out into my yard to try and find something interesting to photograph and the one thing that caught my eye the most was the sun shining through this leaf. I tried to shoot freehand but found the lens having difficulty focus and remaining stable. To mitigate this I setup on a tripod. I snapped a few shots at different ISOs, shutter speeds and apertures. I knew that I wanted a deep depth of field since such a high focal length compress a lot. I also wanted addition texture so shooting on a higher ISO I think enhances that a bit. I also brought up the texture and clarity a bit in LrC
I really like how the sunlight streaming through the leaves brings out the vascular system a lot.
For composition, I wanted some flow and rhythm so I made sure to get two leaves with some negative space between them. It does seem as though the image is a little out of focus. My intention is to look into AI software to try and help with that.
I tried a number of things with this project including using strobes to light a subject.
